Example

Scenario: The Kickback
Engr. Smith is hired by an owner to oversee a project. A concrete supplier approaches Engr. Smith and offers a 5% commission on all concrete orders if Smith convinces the owner to use their product exclusively, even though it is slightly more expensive than competitors.
Violation: Accepting this offer is a direct violation of Canon 4. Engr. Smith must act as a faithful agent for the owner. Taking a secret commission creates a conflict of interest, compromising the engineer's objectivity and potentially harming the client financially.

The Conflict of Interest

You are a Resident Engineer for a government project. The contractor, who is an old college friend, offers to pay for your family vacation as a 'thank you' for processing their progress billing quickly.

Guidelines to Practice

Example

Scenario: Disparaging a Competitor
During a bidding process, Engr. Reyes learns that a rival firm is also submitting a proposal. Engr. Reyes spreads a false rumor to the client that the rival firm uses substandard steel, hoping to win the contract.
Violation: This act violates the guidelines for relations with other engineers and Canon 5. Civil engineers must build reputation on merit, not by indiscriminately criticizing or maliciously injuring another's practice.
